There are neighbourhoods in Brussels that tourists pass through on the way to somewhere else, and there are neighbourhoods that make you stop. Sainte-Catherine is one of the second kind. It sits in the northwest corner of the old city, close enough to the Grand-Place to walk in ten minutes, far enough to feel like it belongs to a different pace of life.
Every two years, on the weekend of August 15th, something happens to the Grand-Place that is difficult to describe to someone who has not seen it. The cobblestones disappear. In their place, 1,680 square metres of cut flowers, arranged by hand, by more than a hundred volunteers, in under six hours, become a single image that covers the entire square.
July in Brussels does not slow down. If anything, it is only just getting started. The first weekend brought the Ommegang to the Grand-Place, and now the city shifts into its summer rhythm, open-air theatre, free concerts, a national celebration, and a handful of surprises that tend to make Brussels one of Europe's most underrated summer destinations.
